The steps, in order

Pick your CSLB classification and document four years of journey-level experience in the last ten. Pay stubs, permits, and former employers all count.

Pass the Law and Business exam plus your trade exam. Study the business math hardest; it fails more applicants than the trade portion.

Post the contractor bond, prove workers comp or exemption, and carry general liability. Then the pocket card arrives and you can pull permits.

Once licensed, get found

Questions shops ask

How long does CSLB licensing take?

Typically three to six months from application to pocket card, depending on exam scheduling and background review.

Can I bid work while the application is pending?

No. Contracting without a license in California voids your right to sue for payment. Wait for the number.
